The National Institute of Chemistry in Ljubljana was established in 1946 as part of the Slovenian Academy of Science and Arts. 

The research is divided into two major fields : life sciences and materials science. 

The Laboratory of Materials Chemistry is the biggest in the field of materials science. Its research is focused on modern battery systems, coating development and electrocatalysts.
